Mans is really getting better with each release and it warms my heart to see him continue to step into his own as his sound and style evolves. Honestly, I think what Ian Matthew is doing lately holds a special place in my heart because I remember – not all that long ago – when his music did nothing for me. It felt generic and, at the risk of being too blunt, as if it was trapped in a gimmick. Now though? The CT-based artist has stepped out of the status-quo “hip-hop” box and stepped up with a sonic experience that blends hip-hop, pop, rock and more.
“The Storm” is his latest offering and, once again, Ian appears to be dipping his feet deeper into the pop-friendly arena. Some may knock this approach, but when you’re knocking the records out of the park like this, I say let the haters keep flapping their gums. Not everything has to be a layered exercise in lyrical depth – this joint is a bop, one that could easily find placement on your favorite radio station. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
“The Storm” is available now on all major streaming platforms. Preview the record below.
